'Linking together people in need with helpers who care'
Aylsham Care Trust (ACT) was recently presented with a national award for its leading role in the development
of St Michael’s Care Complex.

The award was made by Over 50s Housing UK for the “most innovative example of integrated health and social care facilities in the UK”.  In praising the development, the judges said “This landmark project has lifted standards in the UK and has set the bar at a new height”.

The Care Complex is unique in that, through strategic partnerships, it integrates health and social care along with community and social facilities for the people of Aylsham and surrounding district.  It comprises an 86 bed care home with nursing built by Runwood Homes; a 30 bed housing with care scheme to built by Circle Anglia; a health centre to be operated by the NHS and local GPs; and a community centre to be owned and run by ACT.

The development, being built on land donated by ACT’s founder Trustee Rees Coghlan MBE, is seen as ground-breaking.  It involved many other partners including Broadland District Council, Norfolk County Council and
Aylsham Town Council.

Sheila Childerhouse, Chair of NHS Norfolk, said “ACT Trustees are to be congratulated for this much deserved award.  We are delighted to be working with ACT and other partners on this important project to deliver integrated, locally based services for people in the Aylsham area.”

Harold Bodmer, Head of Adult Community Services, Norfolk County Council, said “It is excellent news that ACT’s leading role in this project has been duly recognised with this national award.  We are pleased to be partners in
this landmark project which will enable an increased range of services for the benefit of the local community.”

Broadland District Council’s Deputy Chief Executive, Phil Kirby, said “Broadland District Council has been a strong supporter of this integrated scheme since its inception and we are delighted that ACT’s drive and determination has been recognised by this national award.”

Jenny Manser, Chair of ACT, said “ACT is delighted to receive this recognition of our work to provide this care complex for local people.  We have learned so much from our work on this project that the Trustees of ACT are now helping other communities to achieve similar complexes elsewhere.”

Aylsham Care Trust wins National Award
Work starts on ACT Community Centre

Members of Aylsham Care Trust and partner organisations recently joined Rees Coghlan, founder and former chairman of ACT, to celebrate the start of building work on the long-awaited ACT community centre.  The community centre will form part of St. Michael’s Care Complex in Aylsham which is being built on land donated by Mr Coghlan.

When completed early next year, the community centre will include a café, a commercial kitchen, computer and training rooms, office space and a large multi-purpose hall, all of which can be booked by other groups as well as used by ACT for its own activities.

Rees said “This is my dream coming true.  For a long time I have wanted to see greater provision of services for the residents of Aylsham and when the whole complex is completed we will have the means of providing those services, particularly but not exclusively for older and disabled people.”

Jenny Manser, Chair of ACT said “We are delighted to see work beginning on the community centre at last.  As well as providing a home for ACT and its regular activities, we believe the community centre will provide an additional amenity for the people of Aylsham and the surrounding district.

“We are working in partnership with a wide range of organisations, as well as our care complex partners, to ensure that the community centre and the rest of the care complex provides much needed services to all local residents.”

When completed, St Michael’s Care Complex will provide a range of health, housing and care services to the people of Aylsham and surrounding district.  The complex will comprise a health centre, a housing with care scheme and a care home with nursing in addition to the community centre.

St Michael’s Court, the 86 bedded nursing and residential home, owned and managed by Runwood Homes, was completed last October and has already admitted many residents into the home. In addition, there are a further nine residents in the nursing unit as a result of NHS Norfolk commissioning these beds for patients who are ready to leave hospital, but require a little extra care and support before returning home.

Work is due to start this Spring on both the housing with care scheme, to be owned and managed by Wherry Housing Association, part of Circle Anglia, and the health centre which is being built by a new local charity with a lease to the NHS.
