ACT has been working in partnership with the Town Council, NHS Norfolk, Broadland District Council, Wherry Housing Association and many other partners to provide new community facilities for the town on the hospital site and the adjoining land which was owned by ACT. This land was donated to the project by ACT to ensure that services were developed for Aylsham people.
The total site has been sold to local developer Hopkins Homes and outline planning permission has been granted for health and social care facilities, a community centre and 200 new homes, 35% of which will be affordable homes. There will be a Housing with Care scheme, a Home with Nursing Care run by Runwood Homes and a Health Centre providing a variety of ancillary health services.
There will be an ACT Community Centre, which will include a café, it will be available for booking by other groups or individuals as well as used by ACT for its own charitable activities along with other care services. ACT was instrumental in ensuring that land was retained for future health uses.
“It’s a dream come true” said Rees Coghlan. “For many years I have wanted to see better facilities in the town, particularly for older people. Now, as residents become frailer they will still have the opportunity to live in Aylsham, either in the Housing with Care scheme where they will be able to maintain their independence or in the nursing home if they need full time care.
“In addition, we will have a community centre where we can provide other facilities for the local community and which people can book for their own functions or activities.”
As part of the scheme, the listed building will be refurbished and converted for residential use. The affordable homes will be provided by Wherry Housing Association, part of the Circle Anglia Group.
